Design Trends: Interior Design Trends of the Year

Design Trends: Decorating Trends in 2022

2022 was a year of bringing back the old design trends.

In 2022, the biggest decorating design trends of 2022 brought back a lot of oldies in the interior design world. Therefore, making your home minimalistic and timeless was key this year. Precisely, curating an aesthetic and instagram-worthy home was the goal this year.

With increase in numbers of people who work from home, we saw home offices make their way into more than half of new homes built in 2022, and many people made adjustments to introduce them into their current homes. Similarly, the 2022 interior design trends combined beauty and functionality.

These are the styles that I think made the biggest splash this year 2022. Keep reading to find out what they are!

1. 1980’s decor inspiration

The first on the list, in 2022, the design trends saw a lot of geometric shapes and patterns, bright colors and wallpaper. Bold colors and patterns are from the past, but they are making their way into the present. They brought back the old 80’s style for one of the biggest interior design statements.

2. 1970’s decorations design trends

Next, the mustard colors and mid-century furniture from the 70’s are making a comeback. Just like the 80’s decor trend, these timeless staples are here to stay in the coming years as well, and this will continue to bring back the terracotta, sage and mustard colors of the 1970’s.

3. Multifunctional Spaces

In 2022, interior design trends are showing that people are able to live with less. Following the COVID pandemic, people were forced to live their life thoroughly and completely within the four walls of their home. During this time, they were able to recognize  and be creative with their space. In 2022, the introduction of in-house gyms, home offices and homework rooms was increasingly popular.

4. Design Trend of Lasting Styles

Fourth, with sustainability becoming of greater and greater importance, the idea of “buy it and throw it away” is becoming less relevant. Furthermore, people are buying for quality and less for looks. Therefore, many of the pieces that became popular design trends in 2022, are timeless, more expensive, but will last much longer. The pieces are bought with the intent to stay.

5. Bringing the Outdoors In

This year, we saw a lot of outdoor furniture and style decisions make their way indoors. The modern farmhouse was an increasingly popular trend in 2022. For example, the modern farmhouse uses white wood and brown natural rugs to create a “homey” feel using farmhouse styles.

6. Shades of Green

Surprisingly, the color green is the most popular color right now, despite the boldness. The color green, in any shade, is being used to paint walls, cover couches and cushions and even for flooring. Curtis, a fellow blogger, notes that the color green is “a comforting reminder of the outdoors and our need for a connection with nature.”

7. Layers of Texture

Finally, layers of texture are starting to make their way into designer’s styles throughout the year. In 2022, we saw the introduction of 3D art on walls and wall decor pieces. In addition, decorators are using highly textured fabrics to achieve a cozy look in their homes. Couches are shaggy and the walls are popping out in 2022.
